What to expect on your first visit
Acupuncture involves the use of hair-fine needles inserted into specific points on acupuncture channels (energy pathways) on the body. The needles are approximately 30 times thinner than hypodermic needles. Insertion is generally painless, though you may experience a sensation of heaviness or of energy at the point or along the channels. Only single-use, disposable needles are used. After insertion, needles are retained for about 10-30 minutes.
For sensitive patients as well as for the very young, a Japanese non-insertive technique called Shakuju may be used. Shakuju involves the use of a teishin (non-piercing stainless steel tool) lightly touched to various acupuncture points to activate the points and channels. Treatments may also include cupping (suction cups applied to the skin), moxibustion (a topical herb made from mugwort leaf), gua sha (a technique to help relieve tight muscles and spasms), tui na (Chinese massage) and diet and lifestyle recommendations. You may be left with take-home therapies such as pressballs (tiny stainless steel balls on an adhesive patch) or magnets to help extend the treatment for a few days.
Most people find treatments very relaxing, and many even fall asleep! Depending on the nature of the condition, you should expect to notice some level of improvement within 4 treatments. Many people start to feel effects right away. More acute issues generally resolve faster, while chronic issues may take several weeks to months.
Your initial 90-minute appointment includes time to discuss your current health issues as well as past medical history to determine a correct diagnosis and treatment strategy. Follow-up treatments are 60 minutes. Pediatric sessions are 30 minutes. Treatments are recommended once or twice a week, depending on the condition.
